    OK I started this exercise and I needed to restart all over because there's one thing that I wasn't understanding. You are saying you don't have to memorize and that you can use the fretboard diagram and I've been actively using the diagram while doing the exercise and progressing very easily. But at some point I realised this cannot be useful. I'm reading, not learning. Then in the pdf you explicitly say that you need to do it without the diagram when playing. I'd recommend to note this since I've wasted time practicing without improving my skill!

    Is there a technical difference between Modal Exchange and Modal Interchange or is this just a case of semantics?

    There is a single artist I can think of that uses diminished chords in some sense as the key center. He is a requintista named Juan Neri. He is from a very famous mexican trio called Los Tres Ases. Often times he would end his songs on the tonic,but replace the tonic with the diminished (if the key is C,he would resolve to C diminished). He is somewhat obscure these days but his discography is a gold mine of jazz inspiration. He is kinda responsible for bringing jazz into mexican music. As a musician I highly urge you to listen to his discography for yourself to hear the ideas I'm talking about. Truly world changing despite coming from the 1950s. Juan Fidel Neri Mancilla.

    You have dots on your fretboard, use them! There's 1 or 2 semi-tone of difference max, so it's really easy to just count down/up 1 fret For practicing stay in the 4 fret zone you have every notes you need, randomly choosing the zone on the fretboard and try to play C major scale Way less grindy and as effective imo

    The standard whey is the most god-awful but most prevalent way people are taught modes it's so awful it it really does a disservice to students who are trying to learn modes.

    See i screwed myself over when i was an intermediate player, i focused wayyyy to hard on soloing and not enough on building chords, because after i caught up on my rhythm i realized my solos improved 10 fold... Now I'm out here writing prog rock or something, not sure what you'd call it, vut anyhow lol

    Hi Tommaso. Thanks for the video. But why not reuse what we already know : the notes on strings 6 and 5, and some basic shapes for minor and major triad (that bass players can find with their eyes closed). A major ? Find the root on the 6th string : 5th fret. From the root, the major third is up a string and down a fret : 5th string 4th fret, and we know that's a C#. From the root, the fifth is up a string and up two frets : 5th string, 7th fret, and we know that's an E. A minor ? Find the root on the 6th string : 5th fret. From the root, the minor third is in the same string and up three frets : 6th string 8th fret, and we know that's a C. From the root, the fifth is up a string and up two frets : 5th string, 7th fret, and we know that's an E. Those of us who can visualize (two strings of) the fretboard can just "see" the notes in a triad.

    i read somewhere a slightly different explanation: a word dominant refers to a sound of tritone interval which dominates over any other sounds you can create in any scale, introduces a harmonic tension and whenever applied, enforces a harmonic function which is very well known from a diatonic chord on a specific position in known scales.

    So let’s say I’m playing the c note, to learn where notes are on my fretboard, on each of the strings from bottom to top and I use a picture of a scale chart to help me. It wouldn’t be considered memorization if I just repeatedly play those notes even without looking at the scale with the labeled notes?

    It's not jazz that's bad, it's jazz snobs. There tends to be an ugly elitism among them and they can't accept a difference of opinion. Even metalheads can admit their music isn't for everyone but jazz heads tend to act as if someone not liking jazz means that there's something wrong with them. As for the music itself, it's great!

    great video! the key to enjoying a genre is just to understand what it aims to deliver, and then earnestly listen out for it. i liked when you called it a musical diet, you dont *need* to have a balanced diet to enjoy food but if you want to be healthy (not a music snob) its best to cover all the bases. i would definitely put timbre up along with M/H/R, but maybe im biased as an electronic music fan 😛 you could probably use more conceptual metrics like message for hip hop or performance for rock/jazz since i hear these kinds of complaints ALLLL the time: "whats this song about?", and "theyre not even playing their instruments!"

    Easiest for me is find the fifth, then find the relative minor of the fifth. C->G fifth G->E relative minor of G Also helpful for me is relating the circle of fifths (or fourths) to the tuning of a 7-string bass. Sounds crazy, but it works for me.

  • @dragasan
    @dragasan 11 дней назад

    I'm an old school (before internet) self-taught bassist who learned by fretboard patterns. Okay, I knew about the circle of fifths from library books back in the day, but my experience has shown me many ways people learn this. Outstanding channel! Keep up the great work.

    I like to use a shortcut of the circle of thirds : "Every - Good - Bastard - Deserves - Funeral - And - Chime ". You may start anywhere to line up and you may add more "words" in the row to find more than the triad (stacking thirds "7" ;"9", "11" and "13"). Example for C maj you have "Chime " "Every" "Good" (C E G) and for Cmaj7 you have to add a "Bastard"

    If you know the scale/mode (and you need to know these anyway), you can just stack the third intervals and get all of the triad chords (just skip a note in the scale). Quartal harmony can work the same way, just stack fourth intervals (skip two notes).

  • @dangerkeith3000

    Gwen's way was closest to how I learned all the triads when I started. I was self taught and didn't even know what a Circle of Fifth's was until watching music theory videos on RUclips 20 years later. But I knew the chords in the C major scale so used that.
